Pixar’s latest 3D animation film Up will be the opening for the 2009 Cannes Film Festival this May 13. It will be one for the history books as Up will be the first animated movie and 3D feature to open the prestigious event.
Set in South America, the adventure flick Up is the latest brain child by Oscar nominee Pete Docter who is renowned for directing Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. and for writing Wall-E. Docter collaborates with Bob Peterson, the writer of Finding Nemo and Ratatouille. Up follows 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen tying thousands of balloons to his home to fulfill a dream of adventure in South America. But after lifting off, he finds a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior has become a stowaway on the trip.
“We are happy to have 3D animation open Cannes, as it is one of cinema’s upcoming adventures,” said Thierry Fremaux, one of the organizers of the Cannes Film Festival, “We are very proud to welcome Pixar studios, it’s brilliant world, its talented directors and producers.”
Up is set for release in the US on May 29 and in other territories through the year from that date. It is produced by John Lasseter, co-founder with Steve Jobs of Pixar studios, which was bought by Disney in 2006.
