The Importance Of Split Testing Explained By Jesse Willms
When it comes to maximizing your profit potential on the Internet one of your most important tools is split testing, according to online marketing expert Jesse Willms.
Willms laid out his theory on split testing as part of his ongoing effort to help Internet marketers maximize their profit potential.Willms said that these days, too many emerging entrepreneurs try to “trust their instincts” when it comes to creating their marketing campaigns even though this will, in general, cost them market share and put their companies at risk.
Internet entrepreneurs, he said, need to learn that they themselves are not their target market; they should use split testing to determine what people are really looking for and what will motivate them to buy products and services. He said that to be successful, you need to remember that the Internet is such a huge marketplace; the things that interest you – or even your friends and neighbors – are probably not the same things that will trigger the maximum amount of sales for your company.
Therefore, trusting your instincts, which are based on your unique experiences, will ultimately backfire and burn your marketing efforts. Split testing, he explained, solves that problem. With a split test, you create many different versions of your sales page and test them against each other. See which ones generate the most traffic and monitor which ones lead to the highest conversion rate.
Keep an eye on how long people stay on a given page compared to others in your test.Be prepared to try out any idea that you or a member of your organization comes up with, no matter how weird or far-fetched it may seem. You won’t know what will work until you test it out in the real world. Engage in split tests that vary everything: Try different color schemes. Change your logo around. Try long- and short-form sales letters.
Evaluate as many different types of headlines as you can possibly think of. The main thing is to keep testing until you reach your target conversion ratio. Even then, Willms said, your job is not done. A few months down the line, you may notice that you are no longer generating the sales you’re used to. That’s because potential customers are fickle. What motivated them to purchase in January might not work in March. When that happens, you need to start the split test process all over again.
Doing so, he noted, can be hard work, but it is the only way you will ever know what your potential customers are really looking for when they go online searching for the types of products and services that you are selling. Willms is well respected in the industry; he started making money online when he was only 16 years old and by the time he was 22, had launched several successful online companies.
