Invitation to Ask Questions Regarding Getting a Cartoon Series Produced and Funded

Hi All,

I’ve received a lot of questions and good responses ever since I published my article on ‘8 Steps to Producing a Cartoon Series’.

I would like to invite you to ask all your questions regarding this topic, and I will answer whatever I can to clear any of your doubts and to help those interested in this area. I will be as concise as I can and point out various relevant resouces.

Please note that I will only answer questions to those posted in the blog as comments so that everyone can benefit through them. I am making this exclusive to my blog so that this entry may one day be a valuable resource to anyone wanting to raise funding and produce their own animated series.

I don’t profess to know all the answers, but having done this a few times, I have that little bit of experience to share – so do be gentle if you catch me clueless. For those that might have the answer, please feel free to contribute.

Also, there might be questions that are related but fall outside the scope of this topic, and although I will do my best to reply, but please don’t expect me to be able to answer all questions as they may be simply too difficult to answer.

Hey guys, Rob Mack from Sydney here, thanks for the opportunity to discuss taking the leap. I have been chipping away at an animated music video concept for quite some time now which I plan to release by end of 2010. I have solid 3d skillset as well as fairly thorough training in aesthetics and business.

I’m leaning heavily toward edgy rather than cute and am wondering for a start what other traits a team of say 4 characters should have… I’m working on back stories and interpersonal dynamics and my goal is to have them all stylised enough to be recognised as a unit as well as empowering them each with purposeful individuality.

Also, with funding, did you sell your ideas? What rights did you retain to the Intellectual Property?

If you want a more thorough discussion, I would prefer if you ask me your questions here directly so others may benefit. I may write an article to answer your questions.

Hello Mr. Chang,

I have a question regarding this wonderful cartoon series idea I have (although I am a little biased).

I have already begun the compilation of the bible for the series and have also partnered with an animator and voice over person for the production of the cartoon.

My question is this: I do not wish to initially sell the cartoon to a network such as nickelodeon or disney. I want to produce the cartoon initially by myself and create a following for it on a channel like PBS for example and then attempt to sell it to a major network while still retaining rights as a creative director/producer. If I produce the show for a station like PBS is there a chance that I will still be able to sell it to a major network.

What is the best way to go about self producing and distributing my cartoon series with the hopes of later selling it while still retaining creative rights?

Any and all guidance you could provide will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Mr. Chang,

I was researching online about becoming an animation producer when I found your article. Thank you for the amazing advice, but I have a question. Is it possible that I could ask a studio to produce a cartoon that was not mine? Basically, I would like to turn a book series into a cartoon show, but the characters and storyline from the series is not mine. Is this possible?
