Disney announces that Alice in Wonderland will be shown in full 3D glory in IMAX theaters the world over on March 5, 2010. The live-action adaptation of Lewis Carroll grand fantasy tale reunites the accomplished tandem of director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp.

Newcomer Mia Wasikowska will play the lead role of Alice while Depp will play the twisted Mad Hatter. Rounding up the star-studded cast are Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Alan Rickman (Harry Potter’s Snape) as the Catterpillar, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Stephen Fry as The Cheshire Cat, Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts and Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit.

Burton and Depp have been a critically-acclaimed actor-director ever since they starred in Edward Scissorhands in the 1990s. They have since then worked in films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Complementing Depp’s quirky acting, Burton has a distinct vision in his films featuring weird and colorful milieus.

Alice in Wonderland falls into the same category of a fantasy child’s tale set in a very eccentric and twisted world. With interesting characters such as the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Knave of Hearts, expect to see some well-placed 3D animation to render the imaginative world as realistic as possible.

“If ever there was a film that cried out to be presented in Disney Digital 3D and the premium IMAX 3D format, Tim Burton’s fantastic interpretation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is that film,” Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group, said in a statement. “This is going to be an eye-popping cinematic experience as Tim takes moviegoers down the rabbit hole and into the dimensional world filled with incredible characters, sly humor, and wild adventures.”

Alice in Wonderland is an adaptation of the popular 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). It tells the story of Alice who falls down from a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures.

The tale is filled with allusions to Dodgson’s friends. The tale plays with logic in ways that have given the story lasting popularity with adults as well as children. It is considered to be one of the most characteristic examples of the genre of literary nonsense, and its narrative course and structure has been enormously influential, mainly in the fantasy genre. Lewis also wrote its sequels Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There.

“We think that Disney’s new ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is exactly the type of 3D storytelling that will resonate with IMAX audiences,” IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-Chief Executive Officers Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler added in a statement. “We believe our worldwide commercial theater network will be approximately 50 percent larger by the time this film is released, giving more and more people a chance to experience the magic of Disney in IMAX.”

Meanwhile as we wait for 2010, here is the original theatrical trailer of the 1951 Disney classic animation adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Enjoy!
