With the box-office success of China’s 3D cartoon animation full-length feature film Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf, discussions for a sequel are now heating up. The producers of the film Shanghai Media Group are now hard at work at trying to give a sequel for the loyal fan base brought forward by the film. Presently it is under pre-production and could probably start shooting by the tail-end of the year 2009.
Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf was created with a budget of less than a million dollars (RMB6m) but was able to gross around $11m or RMB80m. That’s even more than a hundred percent increase, right there – great pay-off for the investment of the Chinese government.
Shanghai Media Group marketing director Lui Yong describes the success of Pleasant Goat and Big Bad Wolf with this formula: “accurate brand development plus comprehensive planning plus effective integration of resources plus great execution equals box office success.”
Subtitled The Super Adventure, the film tells the story of Pleasant Goat and his old nemesis, Big Big Wolf, into a “bacteriological warfare” inside the body of a snail. Its voice cast includes TVB stars Raymond Lam, Bosco Wong, Kate Tsui, and Malaysian singer Ah Niu voicing the Cantonese version, and the latter also does the Mandarin version and performs the theme song.
