BBC Olympics Animation Journey to the East

Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy head on a “Journey to the East” for BBC Sport this summer.

This animation based on the classical Chinese novel, “Journey to the West”, was produced by the men behind virtual band Gorillaz - Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett.

The animation is great to say the least. I would say that Damon and Jamie got it right the way they depicted the fighting sequences and monsters in the 2 minute animated clip. It’s a bit lacking on the characterization though if you ask me. The Monkey God is definitely the most powerful of the lot with his 72 transformation moves but not well depicted here. In fact he seemed to be pretty weak save for his famous cloud. Pigsy and Sandy had even more action than him!

There is also controversy that the characters look hideous … but well … these are the guys who produced Gorillaz!
